Welcome to my world of photography!

Take a look around and make yourself at home.

When you search the internet for macro photography you will find tons of beautiful images of plants and insects. One is even more beautiful than the other. I was very attracted by this and decided to buy a macro lens for my trip to Sabah (Malaysia) a year ago. I wasn’t thrilled when I saw my first photos. There was still a lot of studying and practice to be done before I could board the plane to Malaysia.

One of the things I ran into was the shallow depth of field. I was able to compensate this a bit by choosing a higher aperture value, but that requires a lot of light. I know that I can solve this by choosing a high ISO value, but that has the disadvantage that gives noise in the photo. I started to find out how other photographers managed to create those beautiful images.
What I actually already knew was that a macro flash had to offer the solution. Purchasing such a flash is expensive. Fortunately, after searching, I came across a beautiful second-hand Canon MR-14EX II macro Ringlite. I started working with this with great pleasure. From the first moment I fell in love with it. All macro photos I take from that moment, I take with this flash.
Of course, not everything went well from the first moment. In my opinion, the flash was much too close to the subject, causing the light to reflect in the subject. That is of course not desirable. I don’t want to make it obvious that I used a ring flash. To make a long story short, I practiced a lot with different settings, and came to the conclusion that the following settings work best for me:
1. I work by hand. So without a tripod
2. I always shoot at ISO 100
3. F-value is >18
4. Shutter speed is at least 250s
5. I adjust the light from the left or right side of the flash according to the circumstances and it is never actually attached to my lens. So I usually hold the flash in my left hand, aimed at my subject. I admit it is hard work. A Canon EOS 90D with the 100MM F/2.8 L IS USM MACRO lens in the right hand and the flash in the left, but this works for me!
As you have understood by now, I am not a professional photographer. I take photographs because I enjoy it. Enjoy the outdoors, surprise my wife with another photo of an insect that she would normally swat with a fly swatter, or scare her by showing a super-sized spider on the screen. Although I am very proud of some of my photos, there is still a lot to learn and practice. So come back to my website every now and then to see the progress. Thank you very much for your visit!
